When I was pregnant with Lucy I considered cloth diapers (CD) but never followed through with it. This time around the thought of having twins and Lucy all in diapers at once has me clutching onto my pocketbook a little tighter.
I think the biggest motivating factor for CD for me is the money we can save. With the ecomony going south over the last year or so, our business has not been nearly as profitable as it has in the past. We are feeling the squeeze along with so many other people. And our expenses for having to plan for 2 babies this time around has been costly: a second crib, another carseat, a double stroller ( although we did get a good deal on a used one), another rocking chair (cause Lucy is very attached to hers and with her world about to change so drastically, I hated to rip yet another item out of her room) and then the additional little odds and ends that needed to be purchased. So, with all that in mind, I have been seriously researching CD.
It's very overwhelming to start thinking about going cloth. It's not your momma's diaper anymore, that's for sure. There are so many differnent choices and ways to go when it comes to cloth that it's really hard to know what to start out with. I've spent the last week or so, just trying to understand the lingo and all the products that are offered. I am just now feeling somewhat more confident about the whole thing. And I'm actually getting a little bit excited about the prospect of cloth diapering. I know...kinda strange to be excited about CD.
The intital start up cost is a little high and with having twins it'll be more, but overall it would save us money. And it's something I can add to as we go. I don't have to buy everything all at once, just a few CD here and there to see what we like and then go from there. I haven't purchased anything just yet. I think it makes more sense to wait and see how big the girls are when they are born and then I'll know better what sizes I'll need.
I'm going to start out slow though. I have decided that in the first month or so we will use disposables. I will be having a c-section and with the recovery of that and the initial lack of sleep with 2 newborns I don't think I want to try and figure out CD right away. Also, I don't want to have to buy all the newborn CD stuff. I think I'll wait till they hit the 10 pound mark cause that's where most CD start with the size small. That's if I go with the prefolds and covers intead of all-in-ones. Now your wondering what prefolds are aren't you??
I really want to give it a try. I am hoping that I don't lose my motivation once the girls get here and life starts taking over.
